Course Overview

Graduate from the UK’s only Centre for Excellence in Media Practice and a recognised Skillset Screen and Media Academy. Radio is undergoing enormous changes both in the way it is created and in the way we listen to it. The development of DAB, Internet Radio and Podcasting bring with them opportunities for reaching new audiences and for using sound in fresh, exciting ways. At the same time the chance to operate low-budget, small-scale community stations puts this powerful tool in the hands of charities and companies seeking to reach local audiences directly and professionally. We aim to offer you the skills to work in radio and audio production in an industry where an understanding of a variety of media and platforms is increasingly important.

A key aspect of the course is its attention to new technologies including digital editing and mixing and exploration of the possibilities afforded by the Internet. Students operate an Internet radio station, BIRSt enabling them to gain 'hands-on' experience of scheduling, managing and running a radio station.

MA Radio Production is part of the Media School’s portfolio of production MAs. Students will also work on projects in teams with students in other disciplines such as scriptwriting and interactive media.

The course is made up of five elements:

  • Radio production and theory
  • Radio marketing and regulation
  • Advanced radio and audio production
  • Cross platform practice
  • The Masters Project (Production or Research)

Students on the course use the latest sound recording, editing and studio equipment. The Media School has an excellent reputation for its resources and these include industry standard radio studios and sound editing facilities.
