About this course

- Make two Random Weave Baskets.
- Describe how to make similar work independently from the same or similar materials.
- Work this technique on different scales.
- Describe how it could be applied to other craft disciplines, e.g. sculpture and jewellery.

Basic materials are provided. Small quantities of additional/alternative materials may be available to buy from the Tutor. Course programme

- Introduction to the principles of random weave basketry.
- Selecting materials, and sourcing equipment needed (this is minimal and easily obtained)
- How to get started
- Weaving the body of your basket or 3D form
- Joining materials
- Finishing
- How random weave basketry is used by a broad spectrum of artists and craftspeople.

You will be taught using a mix of demonstrations together with verbal explanations by the tutor and handouts to support this, you will also have opportunities to observe and handle samples and examples of work made using this technique. There will also be a short slide show illustrating work by makers working with a variety of materials and a range of scales to put this Basketry technique into a worldwide context within Contemporary Basketry. There will be a very small amount of preparation between some classes (approx 1 hour) and students may like to continue with work in progress between sessions, but this is optional.

Additional information

City Lit offers a range of Basketry courses covering techniques such as willow, rush, plaiting, and brush making, which will appeal to a wide range of interests. The Basketry project VC205 is a project led course, where you can explore different approaches to twined basketry. The City Lit Basketry course VA190 is a two year, in depth study of Basketry, next entry is in September 2019.
