Course programme

This 10-module distance learning course explores the principles of relationship and couple counselling, both in face-to-face situations and online. It is designed for qualified counsellors who have already completed their counselling diploma and would now like to develop additional skills in this specialised area. The course is designed to meet the needs of counsellors working within a range of counselling models and approaches.

Subjects covered include: couple counselling - theory and practice; developing a structured approach; understanding the difficulties of family life; transitions; separation; divorce; sexuality; gender and identity; identifying relationship patterns; understanding abusive relationships; counselling clients in violent relationships; developing understanding in couples; relationship counselling with individual clients; and sex therapy.

The course fee includes course book Couple Therapy: working with individuals within their relationship, all required course material and full tutorial support. Students have up to three years to complete this course, allowing them to work through the modules at their own pace. On average, however, it takes students around 6 - 8 months to complete the course, based on 4 - 5 hours study time per week. The course includes some practical work (approx. 6 hours), which students can arrange themselves or through Learning Curve. (To take part in practical training students must first successfully pass 7 course assignments. They should also have a Diploma in Counselling or equivalent, as a minimum, and some face-to-face counselling experience. Liability insurance is also required before undertaking practical work. Our tutorial team can offer further advice on suitable qualifications or insurance requirements, so please get in touch if you are not sure.)

As noted, this course assumes some knowledge of face-to-face counselling and is ideal for counsellors who would like to transfer their existing to work with couples, as well as those who would like to develop a better understanding of relationship counselling and sex therapy.
