Don is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist and Lecturer at City University, London. He runs a busy private practice in Stoke Mandeville, Buckinghamshire, has consultancy work in oncology counselling at the Harley Street Clinic, London, and is Research Director for the Eyetracker research company. Don has an extensive research background and specializes in teaching research methodology

Course programme

Aims

To establish a broad foundation in research methodology for psychotherapists l To provide participants with an interesting and confidence building experience in the practice of research l To develop knowledge and skills in support of later dissertation work l To act as a rehearsal for project management of dissertation work l To promote a critical and creative research mindedness in psychotherapy trainees

At the end of this Module, participants should...

  • Have a critical appreciation of the 3 main methodology paradigms (Large Number Quantitative, Qualitative, and Single Case Experimental)
  • Be able to usefully distinguish between Methodology, Method and Design considerations
  • Take an informed view about Scientist Practitioner and Reflective Practitioner perspectives applied to psychotherapy research
  • Have a better comprehension of the language of research
  • Have started to develop critiquing skills to evaluate research designs
  • Acquired a confidence building experience of practical research
  • Identified their own learning need for further development

Teaching & Assessment

Teaching will include a variety of learning methods including lecture/ discussion, class based exercises, practical field work & preparatory reading, exercises. There is one home assignment of 3000 words, due by 30th June 2010 for Certification.

You will need to bring

Sound recorder
For the practical work on the course you will need a voice recorder (tape, mini disk or digital media) to record research interviews. Ensure that the sound quality is clearly audible. Remember to have spare batteries.

Electronic calculator
You will also need an electronic calculator for the course which can perform squares (ײ) and square roots (√×). The one on your mobile phone will not be sufficient.
