The RHS qualifications are highly respected both within the horticultural industry and in the academic world. This course provides a broad grounding in horticulture with a wide range of theoretical knowledge. It is delivered at our campus within Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Edgbaston.You will learn a wide range of technical skills, working with specialised and highly experienced staff.
Subject covered include;
Core units
• Soil testing
• Sowing seeds and vegetative propagation techniques
• Practical skills in ground preparation for seeding and planting
• Practical skills in establishing seeds and plants in soil
• Care and pruning of plants
• Identification of a range of common garden plants, weeds, pests, diseases and disorders and beneficial organisms

Course programme
Entry Requirements
There are no prerequisites for entry to RHS qualifications. However, a keen interest in gardening and the outdoors is essential. You will have an interview for this course prior to enrolment.
Delivery and Assessment
Each unit will be assessed by means of a range of practical activities, with tests for plant, pest and disease identification.
Progression
After completing this course you may progress by studying the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Garden Planning, Establishment and Maintenance and RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth, Propagation & Development to achieve the RHS Level 2 Diploma in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture.
