Historians examine roads as a population geographic communication means, revealing the changes of human mobility. Roads are considered a manifestation of effective national control and defense, especially in regard to the early territorial composition of states.
Both a good transportation infrastructure and measures for the efficient work of transport are the key condition of European competitive and global integration into the modern society.
Road, Railway and Urban Engineering study programme provides knowledge of communication structures, roads, streets, railways planning, design, building and maintenance; also, urban planning and design, urban infrastructure maintenance and management.
This field specialists' work involves all the known transportation means and their infrastructure: highways, streets, railways, squares, airdromes, bunders, crossroads, viaducts, skyways, bridges, and even bike tracks or underground parking.
Various processes have a huge impact on this work include: the global processes, such as global climate warming or the fourth industrial revolution, when the advanced technologies require the readjustment of roads, e.g. for electro mobiles or pilotless vehicles; political processes, when due to various reasons roads are closed and the traffic is being redirected, or the boarders are being opened, which results in bigger traffic flows.
When planning the infrastructure, road, railway and urban engineers pay great attention to four main criteria: transportation costs (a possibility to reduce fuel consumption), time (a possibility to travel faster), accident rate (a possibility to drastically decrease it), impact on the environment (a properly planned road significantly decreases pollution levels).
