2. Course description The aim of the course is to widen knowledge of vocabulary and grammar to facilitate communication on a variety of topics. Emphasis is on developing and improving speaking and listening skills for use in real life situations. Different topics are covered each term. Typical topics covered at Stage 3 may include: • talking about present, past and future activities; • making plans for holidays and finding out tourist information; • making arrangements and dealing with problems (restaurants, hotels, shops etc). Sessions are lively and varied with goals tailored to individual needs. The emphasis is on speaking and listening, with pair and group activities to maximise opportunities to speak in the language. Reading, writing and essential grammar are also incorporated into the course.

3. Entry requirements Stage 3 and Stage 3+ are for learners who can hold a simple conversation and follow basic directions and instructions. You will learn to express your likes and dislikes and give simple opinions. You will also use a range of tenses.For guidance on choosing the right course, please complete a self-assessment form (available on the Surrey Adult Learning website and from the Customer Service Team), which will give an indication of the stage you are at in the language.New learners are welcome to join Terms 2 & 3 provided they are the right level for the course. If you have any questions, please ask the Customer Service Team for advice.We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. Please let staff know if you require any extra support when you enrol and they will arrange for a member of the Supported Learning Team to contact you to discuss your support needs.
