Our short courses are designed to help healthcare practitioners develop their understanding of child safeguarding, from basic knowledge, through specialist to expert levels. They use current research and practice to inform training to ensure attendees receive guidance on current issues. We provide short courses for levels 1 - 5 of child safeguarding training to assist healthcare organisations meet their safeguarding training needs.

The courses have been designed for healthcare clinicians, depending on level, based on the Intercollegiate Document Safeguarding Children and Young People: Roles and competences for health care staff (RCPCH, 2014).

Course programme

Course Details

You can choose from the following five courses provided for NHS levels 1-5. These study days are available in-house for bespoke group training, as well as our High Wycombe Campus.

Level I course

This is a short introduction to basic child abuse for healthcare staff.

  • How to recognise potential indicators of child maltreatment - physical, emotional, sexual abuse, and neglect including radicalisation, child trafficking and FGM.
  • The impact a parent/carers physical and mental health can have on the well-being of a child or young person, including the impact of domestic violence
  • The importance of children's rights in the safeguarding/child protection context.
  • How to respond if there are concerns, including where to report concerns and where to seek advice

Level II course

This course includes a basic introduction to child abuse, as well as specific forms of abuse of note, and the process of referring cases to children's social care.

  • How recognise, understand and respond to child abuse and neglect
  • How to refer a case to children's social care
  • Effects of domestic abuse, substance misuse and mental health on parenting
  • Awareness of specific types of abuse (and their implications) including: female genital mutilation (FGM); radicalisation; child sexual exploitation; and child trafficking.

Level III course

This course is for professionals that will frequently need to engage in safeguarding tasks including: referrals; child protection conferences; and serious case reviews.

  • How to recognise, understand and respond to different types of child abuse
  • Effects of domestic abuse, substance misuse and mental health on parenting
  • Effective inter-professional working in child protection and child in need cases
  • Learning from serious case reviews of significant harm
  • Using local knowledge to address practice gaps
  • Information sharing in child protection cases
  • The referral to child protection process
  • How to engage with other clinicians about safeguarding issues.

Level IV course

This course is for named professionals and is designed to ensure their knowledge is up-to-date, and to assist them in supporting other clinicians to undertake robust safeguarding work.

  • Basic safeguarding knowledge (as in Levels I, II, and III)
  • Effective inter-professional working in child protection and child in need cases
  • Learning from serious case reviews of significant harm
  • How to identify safeguarding risks for the organisation
  • How to conduct audits of child protection issues
  • How to support other colleagues to challenge the views of other professionals (in child protection cases)

Level V course

This course is for designated clinicians, and aims to ensure attendees have up-to-date knowledge, and are able to use it in a variety of high-profile situations. These could include media discussions, giving evidence in chief for court, and taking organisational lead in safeguarding networks.

  • Basic safeguarding knowledge (as in Levels I, II, and III)
  • How to support colleagues in safeguarding cases
  • Expert witness and giving evidence in chief
  • Determining safeguarding risks for the organisation
  • How to lead in safeguarding networks such as LSCBs
