Course programme
The course is broadly designed to help all those wishing to learn more about making scale set models, whether theatre or interior designers, stop-motion animators, artists or those pursuing a hobby -architects or product designers please see below *. Some prior making experience is preferable though not essential. The course provides a basic introduction to methods of constructing in sheet materials (whether card, wood or plastic), shaping or modelling soft materials to achieve difficult forms (using modelling clays or soft foams), achieving realistic textures (using fillers or ready-made coverings) and finally methods of painting.
Participants are guided through set exercises each day, alongside demonstrations and showing of prepared examples. In addition certain specialised methods (such as mouldmaking/casting, scale figure-making or soldering metals) can be included according to group consensus. Materials are provided but participants need to bring their own basic tools (please see the materials list for information).
David (the tutor) suggests that anyone interested in this kind of work should look on his Wordpress site http://davidneat.wordpress.com. Here you will find illustrated articles on model-making which preview a number of the materials and techniques featured in the course. You will also find a more detailed description of this course in the 'Courses' section of the site.
*The course is not really suitable in terms of architectural or product model-making, mainly because the emphasis is on 'realistic' and small-scale work, but if after reading the more detailed course description you are willing to give the tasks a go you will be welcome!
Please note: This course is for students aged 18 and older
