Description
Psychology at Aberdeen began in 1896 with the appointment of George F. Stout to the newly endowed Anderson Lectureship in Comparative Psychology. This lectureship is the oldest in Britain. Prior to this, the University had some eminent philosophers (Philosophy was the precursor of Psychology) such as Thomas Reid and Alexander Bain. Honours degrees in Psychology were introduced after the Second World War, first in Arts (MA) and then in Science (BSc) which remain to this day.Currently the Department has 8 Professors, and 18 other full-time academic staff. It is located at King’s College in the William Guild Building, adjacent to the 600-seat Arts Lecture Theatre. In August 2003, the Department of Psychology was incorporated into the College of Life Sciences and Medicine and became a School in its own right.
