Two years to complete the BTEC National Award and the BTEC National Certificate
Do I need any additional qualifications/ skills?
You will need the ability to work both independently and as part of a team on a range of scientific problems and be well organised and highly motivated. An interest how the sciences apply to industry and the world of work are a definite benefit. Both qualifications combine well with other Science A Levels as well as A Levels in Earth Science and Health and Social Care. Students studying for A Level Health and Social Care courses are encouraged to apply as the course provides excellent additional skills for career progression in the medical sciences.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is entirely coursework based by the completion of regular assignments designed to assess the individual units making up the qualifications. For this reason the ability to meet strict deadlines and work to tight schedules are essential qualities for students wishing to apply. Students are therefore required to have an individual interview with a member of the Science teaching team.
What can I do afterwards?
After successfully completing the qualification students are able to apply for entry into Higher Education for a range of science-based courses or move directly into employment with a variety of employers for apprenticeships and further work based training. Common HE progression routes include degree courses in Biological Sciences, Nursing, and Biomedical Sciences and Environmental Sciences. Employment routes include scientific quality assurance, biomedical laboratory careers and work within the pharmaceutical industry.
Are there any additional costs involved?
Students are encouraged to allow a small budget for buying recommended texts. Visits or field trips will also incur a small cost. Otherwise all materials and equipment needed for the course are provided by the college.
