Science with Education and Qualified Teacher Status BSc (Hons)

How you learn

This course encourages the application of your scientific and teaching knowledge in real settings. You undertake 24 weeks placement across two or more secondary schools, reinforced by diverse and enriching lessons from our highly experienced science and education tutors. You acquire a specialist knowledge of science, and the rounded expertise required to effectively teach it.

You learn through:

• dual academic emphasis on science and education
• 24 weeks of in-school experience, starting at one day per week in first year
• longer placements in second and third year
• wide-ranging teaching methods, with collaborative and individual studies
• purpose-built labs that reflect the school environment

Work placements

Starting from one day per week in your first year to longer periods in your second and third, you work in schools to gain practical experience vital for teaching. You are assigned a school-based mentor to help develop your practical skills and apply theoretical knowledge, helping you to work up from individual students to full classes. While training, you will always have support available from experienced members of staff in all your classes.Sheffield Hallam has strong links to regional secondary schools to ensure your training is of the highest quality. Many of our graduates attain full time employment in our partnership placement schools.

Future careers

The majority of graduates go directly into employment as fully qualified teachers. Science teachers remain in short supply meaning employment prospects are excellent, with the starting salary in 2017/18 a minimum of £22,917. Transferable skills are also developed throughout the course, allowing for alternative career routes.

• local authority/voluntary sector worker or researcher
• non-government organisations (NGO) administrative and research posts
• enrichment work with young people
• more general graduate careers including, for example, retail management and the civil service
