An intensive practical course in screen acting performance, and techniques for acting in front of the camera. It is aimed at students with accredited acting training and some professional experience who have not been able to breakthrough into screen acting who wish to develop confidence in front of the camera.

You will get an in-depth look at techniques ranging from improvisation to character development, based on a script for TV/film. Learn how to get the best performance and build your confidence on screen. Practise moving for the camera and learn about the differences between theatre and television performances. Scenes will be worked, recorded and analysed, and you will be required to learn scripts.

About this course

Demonstrate confidence and relaxation in front of the camera; Show a good knowledge of screen acting in performance;
Hit marks;
Maintain focus and continuity for filmed monologues and duologues.
Perform monologues and duologues for close-up camera work.

Scripts will be supplied.

In groups and pairs with scripts. Scenes will be worked, recorded and analysed with regular feedback.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Course programme

Improvisation
Script interpretation for film/TV drama
Differences between theatre and film performance technique
Character development and performance - what an actor needs to know.

You will perform, film and watch back monologues and duologues from a television/film script. There will be one research assignment in modules 1 & 2 to further your understanding of film history and acting techniques for the camera. . You will be expected to prepare and learn a total of 4 minutes of dialogue over the module.

Please note that acting classes by their very nature can involve exercises and the exploration of material that some students may find challenging.
