This course is an introduction to the screen-printing process, aimed at beginners and the curious. Designed to give you an understanding into the whole process, you will make your own creatively screen printed edition to take home.This course will teach you the key elements of the process. You will learn both creative techniques and practical skills, how to print competently and creatively and learn image making techniques. Learn how to set up your own work for screen-printing, gain an understanding of colour mixing and preparing inks, paper stocks and the safe and effective use of the studio and equipment. You will be shown artists examples and the potential this process has to offer to your own work and to different disciplines.

About this course

- Screen print onto paper using water based ink- Gain an understanding of the process start to finish- Image making techniques- Create a photo stencil- Registration- Find potential ways to take your work further- Achieve skills and confidence in printmaking practice, which may be used as a springboard for a more advanced printmaking courses.

All materials are included for this course. You may wish to bring original sketches or artwork as a starting point for your screenprinting.

You will be taught through tutor led demonstration, explanation and guidance. You will practically apply the skills to your own work. Optional research tasks may be offered on an individual basis and you will be shown examples of artists work.

Course programme

The course will introduce the technical skills needed in creating and making a screen print, including the use of equipment, tools and materials and basic printing methods. You will be introduced to image making techniques that work well with the process using collage and / or specific media to create and edit your own artwork.

Students will gain an understanding of how to make a screen print from a photo stencil. You will learn to set up artwork in order to make a photo stencil, basic skills in image registration and how to mix inks .The course will also give an understanding into the potential of a creative exploration to the process.

Additional information


This course leads to either Screenprinting 2 or Screenprinting: all levels, or screenprinting for graphic artists.
