Sculpture
This course offers students the opportunity to explore form and space through a range of processes and materials. The results of this exploration could be in the form of purely decorative work, or they may have some element of functionality. Either way, the aim is to produce exciting, unusual, original and challenging sculptural forms in ceramics, wood, metal and plastics.

The course also provides opportunities for students to participate in department and organised trips to local and national galleries and sculpture parks. Theses are provided at a reasonable cost. In the past our students have visited many major exhibitions, particularly in London, and have also attended talks and seminars given by world-renowned practitioners.

We believe that these visits are an important part of the students's art education as they enhance theoretical input and allow art works and environments to be experienced at first hand.

What Will I Learn On The Course?

Drawing is encouraged as the primary means of recording observations and developing ideas in three dimensions. This is supported by a range of model making skills in a range of media. Students will also look into the work of a variety of sculptors, architects and other 3D design practitioners, in order to inspire and inform their own practical work.

The course is suitable for students who have open and enquiring minds and who enjoy the process of making.

The range of materials and methods of working include:
  • carving - cutting and shaping
  • modelling - forming, moulding and bending
  • casting - clay and plaster
  • constructing - joining, gluing, stitching and soldering
  • site specific
