It requires students to apply their skills in a variety of tasks designed to complement the language requirements of the other modules in the programme. This module is taken over 20 weeks.

English for academic purposes (20 credits)
English for Academic Purposes aims to develop students' awareness of and control over academic discourse, and the various text types used within their disciplines. The module builds on the experiences and knowledge students bring to Sheffield Hallam from their own diverse study backgrounds, and invites students to apply these and new linguistic and analytical perspectives to their current academic context. Students engage with a variety of speaking, writing and analytical tasks, from investigating vocabulary and grammatical structures in texts to delivering presentations. By the end of the module, students will have compiled an oral and written portfolio, demonstrating their ability to produce effective academic texts. The module is taken intensively over one semester for exchange students, or is spread over two semesters for full-time students.
