At least 5 GCSEs A – C including Maths and English, unless otherwise stated at interview for specific subjects requirements. Course Content This subject will enhance your understanding of human social life and develop a variety of techniques for studying and thinking about the social world that challenges the ‘common sense’ assumptions of everyday life. You will study the methods sociologists use to find out about behaviour in society, and the theories they use to organise and explain their findings. You will learn about these methods and theories through the study of specific subject areas, like the sociology of youth and culture, protest and social movements, health, crime and deviance and the media. In both the first and second year of the course, you will consolidate what you have learned by doing a piece of coursework. This will allow you to take the role of a sociologist and demonstrate your skills and imagination. Progression Sociology is accepted for entry to many degree courses at universities across the UK. Equally, the material you will study would be useful if you intend to pursue a career in journalism and the media, social work, occupational therapy, nursing, health service administration, youth work, local and central government work, the police and prison services, business management, personnel management, market and social research. Past students have gained places on courses such as BA (Hons) Sociology, BA (Hons) Social Anthropology, LLB (Hons) Law and BA (Hons) International Politics at institutions such as Aberystwyth University, University of Hertfordshire and University of London and Warwick University. Fees • If you are aged 16-18 as of 31 August on the year of enrolment – no course fee. • If you are over 19 as of 31 August and enrolling on a full-time programme of study a tuition fee will be applicable in most cases.
