Course programme

This one day course is for and about artists or practitioners contemplating taking their first steps in sound design. This could be to improve the sound for your film, television or VR and game-related work, or thinking more specifically about sound for gallery spaces or installation. We'll Start by listening, you will begin to think about how you might realise a work in sound. You will start to understand the skills that are needed to cultivate work in sound, or how to apply your own talents to sound design, a rapidly growing form of expression. Since Susan Phillipz won the Turner Prize in 2010, for a work rendered only in sound, the use of sound by artists has expanded. A gallery that doesn’t consider sound installation today is rare. And yet many artists are tentative about working in sound.

Topics Covered

  • The “rules” for discussing work in sound
  • The three processes of sound creation
  • The four corners of sound work
  • Recording sound
  • Editing sound, an introduction to Digital Audio Workstations.
  • Outputting sound
  • The language of sound – an introduction
Course Outcomes
You will have developed an awareness of the technical processes involved with creating good sound for your projects. And leave with your own simple “sound work” that you are able to discuss.
