This Spanish and TEFL course runs in 2016/17.

Spanish is a major world language spoken by around 450 million people. Combining Spanish with TEFL gives you the chance to live and work in a multitude of countries around the world teaching English as a foreign language.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

The Spanish BA Honours degree will provide you with a real understanding of modern Spain and the Hispanic world including recent social, political, business and cultural developments. You can study Spanish with French, Business or TEFL.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

  • a year studying or working in a Spanish-speaking country, which provides you with an international experience that many businesses are looking for when employing a graduate;
  • the opportunity study alongside students from Spain who are doing a placement in our School;
  • use of modern technologies, such as busuu and Duolingo, to maintain links with native speakers of the language that you are studying;
  • topics in Spanish culture and society that give you specific applied language skills which will be relevant to the workplace;
  • links with companies in Spain including Kuoni Destination Management Madrid (event management), Contemporary Art Centre (Malaga), AIM Spain S.L. (events and tourism), Grupo Antolin Irausa S.A. (automotive), Casamona International S.L. (real estate) and others;
  • the opportunity to gain valuable work experience by mentoring pupils and shadowing Spanish teachers;
  • students who combine Teaching English as a Foreign Language with Spanish benefit from the opportunity to obtain a Cambridge ESOL teaching qualification, the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) or Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT), as an integral part of the course. Cambridge ESOL is part of the University of Cambridge, and its English language teaching qualification is recognised throughout the world.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

This course is regularly reviewed and updated to reflect new developments and the requirements of the profession and of employers. The following represents some of the subjects that currently make up the course. You will develop your proficiency in Spanish through the study of Spanish society and contemporary culture. You will also learn about teaching English and have the opportunity to teach learners as part of your regular coursework.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your course will be based on a series of mini-lectures and task-based activities such as translation from and into Spanish, listening and grammar exercises, oral presentations and summary writing from written and audio/visual sources. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice. The course will allow you to gain an internationally-recognised English teaching qualification (CELTA or TKT).

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Assessments on this course include listening comprehensions, translations, summaries, group oral presentations, teaching practice, online grammar tests and reading comprehensions. Some subjects require essay writing, and most are assessed by a combination of coursework and exam (with oral exams for language).

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 35%; coursework, tests, essays 40%; practical or project work 10%; group work etc. 5%; presentations, posters etc. 10%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical week you will have up to 15 contact hours of teaching and this could break down as:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 3 hours per week to practise conversation with a language assistant as well as tutorials (individual or in small groups) and individual project supervision in your final year

Medium group teaching: 10 hours of workshops, seminars and language classes

Large group teaching: 2 hours of lectures each week

Personal study: 25 hours each week studying and revising in your own time
