Why choose this training?
- The Mental Capacity Act states that it is necessary to obtain a person’s view as to their choices and wishes
- involving users of the service and their carers has become a central plank of strategic planning in both social and health care provision
- due to having had a previous lack of opportunity to contribute to their own care or support plans and service delivery many individuals lack confidence to say what they want or cannot language it in a way that fits in with the organisation
- in the past there has existed a (sometimes justifiable) fear that advocating for what you want will give users of the service a negative reputation and a decreased service
- practitioners may need to learn new skills in order to facilitate meaningful engagement with users of their service
- for both sides to work fully together the organisation will need to become more skilled at listening and the users of the service clearer at articulating needs and desires
- positive results ~ a mutual valuing of views and experience, an understanding of the process of service development and delivery and support that is person centred
Length of course: 1 day 9.30 – 4.30
for users of the service this can be delivered in 2 x ½ day
Expected outcomes:
Please note, these outcomes will be different if the course is bought in exclusively for users of the service
Nature of training:
- Maximum of 16 staff members or a group of 8 users of the service. Exercises will range from lecture style input (small) to discussion and small group work and individual sharing within pairs.
- Hand outs will be provided to reinforce all theoretical input.
- Some drama and visual work will be included.
