Special Educational Needs and Inclusion Studies, BA - 2016/17

This programme is designed to promote individual skills, knowledge and understanding to enter a developing workforce of specialist service provision in a multi-disciplinary field. The new recommendations of the The Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice 0-25 2014 indicates a government commitment to supporting training to promote positive quality services for children from 0 to 25 and their families. The nature of the workforce will enable diversity of professional roles and the academic nature of this programme will promote employability by exploring the nature of collaborative working and the importance of Education and Health and Social Care working together to establish partnerships for children, parents and a range of agencies. The programme draws upon a number of academic fields including, education, health, sociology, psychology, geography, history, politics, religious studies, children’s rights, law and social justice and social policy. The aim of the programme is to deliver an exciting and challenging curriculum exploring the historical and political debates that govern issues surrounding Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Inclusion. Your study will examine medical and social models of Special Needs and consider how possible social construction can lead to potential barriers for many groups in society. Modules will also consider the complexity of society and examine variables that will influence children’s transition into adulthood and beyond. In addition you will explore global perspectives of inclusion and will critically analyse international policy. When you study SEN and Inclusion Studies you will explore the importance of reflective practice and professional identity. You will have the opportunity to develop the skills needed for higher education and explore your personal values and the values associated with undergraduate study enabling opportunities for reflection and professionalism. The benefit of engaging in a practical placement in year two will develop your individual career portfolio, personal reflection will identify future learning needs and professional goals. Continuous development will allow you to understand the importance of critically engaging in theoretical perspectives of working with children, young adults and their families.
