Specialist Black and White Darkroom Processes (short course)

This course will build on your existing experience of black and white analogue printing. You'll learn how to improve print quality and judge the right grade and quality paper needed for the image. There will be an exploration of the use of flashing and controlled fogging, and you'll be taught specialist techniques such as lith printing, liquid emulsion and the process of solarisation. We'll also help you reach a high standard of print finishing and print mounting for presentation and you'll be encouraged to produce a series of work. We have two fully equipped professional darkrooms with a wide range of enlargers for both 35mm and medium format film for you to make use of throughout the course. Specialist processes will be taught through talks, demonstrations and workshops, while practices will be developed through assignments and discussion. The approach to learning is creative and experimental, with individual and personal attention to each student. Workshop materials will be supplied and you'll be advised on appropriate materials to purchase for your work to make what is considered to be a good print, concentrating on the choice of the correct grade of paper.
