About this course
You should usually have an HND in Specialist Makeup or a relevant subject with a merit profile. You will also need a portfolio of your work demonstrating your expertise; competency in the English language (minimum IELTS score of 6 for international students); the capacity for in-depth research, critical reflection and independent study; intellectual skills and theoretical knowledge of historical and contemporary cultural issues; self-motivation and a willingness to participate in evaluation activities.
There will also be a makeup skills trade test as part of your interview.

Course programme
You will be trained in our makeup studios by active industry professionals who will help you to develop your creative skills. The course includes a mix of research, professional and institutional practice, cultural studies and practical work. It synthesises skills from many disciplines: research, design, visualisation, body adornment and prosthetics, theatre makeup and wig dressing. You will be encouraged to focus on the creative development of concepts and throughout the year you will work towards a portfolio of work that showcases your skills.
Teaching and learning is through a combination of lectures, seminars, student presentations, one-to-one studio teaching, studio critiques, individual and group tutorials and self directed study.
You must successfully complete the following 5 modules to achieve your final award:
- Professional review
- Contextual studies for design
- Technical processes for theatre and camera
- Visualisation
- Negotiated final major project.
