About this course
Five GCSEs at grade C or above or a relevant Level 2 qualification with Merit profile where appropriate. Students must also have at least a grade D in GCSE English.

The Programme
The course is a vocational insight into the world of sport that combines theoretical research assignments with practical based assessment. Coursework for 18 units must be completed over a two year timescale.
The Programme Content
Units address broad areas of sport including Sports Development, Sports Coaching, Exercise, Health & Lifestyle, Sports Massage, Training & Fitness, Fitness Testing, Health & Safety, Practical Team & Individual Sports, Rules, Regulations & Officiating, Nutrition, Physiology, Instructing Physical Activity & Exercise, Sports Psychology, Organising Sports Events, Sports Injuries, Sport & Society. An emphasis is placed on raising participation in sport at a local level. You learn by completing assignments that are based on realistic situations that may be encountered by a Sports Development Officer, Fitness Instructor, Sports Teacher or similar sport and leisure professional. You will be expected to take an active role in a range of sports events in the local community.
Progression / Careers
Progression to Higher Education is very popular, leading to a career in PE Teaching, Sports Development, or Leisure Management. Fitness Instructing, Sports Massage and Sports Coaching are also possibilities.We have a number of sports related Foundation Degrees here at North Devon College.
