Course programme

What you'll study

Modules

Sport Management MSc covers a wide range of topics; to give you a taster we have expanded on some of the core modules affiliated with this programme and the specific assessment methods associated with each module.

Sport Markets and Industries

Sport Markets and Industries

The Sports Markets and Industries module introduces students to the commercial sport sector, through the study of its revenue sources, patterns of commercialisation and sport consumption. Exploring and discussing its challenges and bad practices also takes place, which assists in developing an understanding of its nature and various components.

Managing Service Quality in Sport

Managing Service Quality in Sport

This module introduces the key concepts and practices in the management of service quality in various sport organisations. On completion of the module, students should be able to understand the needs for service quality and customer satisfaction from the perspectives of both managers and consumers. The module is assessed fully through coursework.

Economics of Sport and Leisure

Economics of Sport and Leisure

The module aims to equip students with an understanding of how theoretical and empirical microeconomics feature within the Sports and Leisure industry. It adopts a non-intimidating approach which does not assume prior study of economics, but seeks to draw on real world examples and applications to encourage better understanding of supply, demand and pricing decisions in the industry. The module is assessed via an individual essay and a two-hour exam.

Management of Human Resources

Management of Human Resources

The aim of this module is to examine critically the role of Human Resource Management within the modern day organisation and global society. It particular, students will critically evaluate the application of mainstream sports specific HRM theory to sports organisations' practice. The two assessments include a group presentation and an individual assignment.

Research Methods for Sport Management

Research Methods for Sport Management

This module is a fundamental component of the Masters degree, and shapes students' learning in all other modules. Research methods is not only of academic interest. Market research, for example, is also paramount in sport management. In the module students are taught on four main areas: philosophical assumptions underpinning Sport Management research, quantitative research methods, qualitative research methods, and designing a research proposal. The module is assessed through short coursework assignments that cover each one of the four areas mentioned above.

Sport Policy, Governance and Law

Sport Policy, Governance and Law

This module studies the political and legal regulation of the sports sector. It discusses what are the different political and legal tools used by governments to ensure a healthy development of sport in concrete social contexts. Sport policy, sport governance and sport law are the main discipline areas discussed in this module. Assessment involves a poster presentation and a class test.

Accounting for Decision Making

Accounting for Decision Making

This module introduces the key areas of financial and management reporting that managers in the sport industry will require to: (1) synthesise the financial position and performance of organisations, (2) manage the high-level financial aspects of the business and (3) make key decisions. Throughout the unit, the aim is to focus on the use and users of accounts in the context of sport management. Assessment is by coursework and examination.

Marketing Management

Marketing Management

In this module students will gain knowledge of the essential marketing theories. The module examines the role of marketing within sport organisations, it develops key marketing skills for use in the sport sector and evaluates the relevance of marketing theories to the contemporary sport industry. The module is assessed through group coursework and an exam.

Strategic Management

Strategic Management

The module of Strategic Management aims to introduce students to strategic thinking as well as the development and implementation of strategic decisions within sports and leisure organisations. In this frame, a number of tools for analysing strategy will be demonstrated and students will be required to apply them and analyse contemporary features of the sports industry.

Research Project

Research Project

The final, major piece of assessment is the Research Project. Each student is assigned a supervisor and will construct an individual research project. The project should explore and uncover new knowledge about an area of sport management. Popular areas include sport marketing, management, economics and policy.
