Course programme



This course is designed for those who wish to commence a career, or are already employed in the leisure industry for a minimum of 30 hours per week. Learning through practical and theory sessions at College is teamed with work-based experience and training.


The course combines developing your practical and theoretical skills at College, together with experience gained in the workplace.



What will I Learn?

NVQ Diploma in Sports Development Level 3, units include:



  • Manage Own Resources and Professional Development

  • Contribute to Strategic Development in Sport and Active Leisure

  • Provide Leadership in Sport and Active Leisure

  • Promote Equality and Diversity in Sport and Physical Activity

  • Ensure the Health, Safety, Welfare and Security of Customers and Staff

  • Plus Optional Units


Award in Employment Awareness in Active Leisure and Learning Level 3



Units include:



  • Understanding the Active Leisure and Learnig Sector

  • Understanding the Employing Organisation


Certificate in Sports Development Level 3



Units include:



  • Sports Development

  • Assessing Risk in Sport


As part of the Apprenticeship framework you will also study Employment Rights and Responsibilities, and Functional Skills Level 2/GCSEs in English and maths.



What are the entry requirements?

Successful completion of a relevant level 2 qualifiation.



What next?

Possible progression to a level 4 qualification. Higher education opportunities may include the HNC/HND in Sport (Coaching and Sport Development) and Foundation Degree in Management of Sport at Colchester Institute. Career pathways include sports development officer, working with local communities and supporting amateur sports clubs. Further training and development may lead to roles such as senior sports development officer or sports development manager.

Considering an apprenticeship?
Many young people look to an apprenticeship to gain valuable skills directly in the workplace.
You can apply for both an apprenticeship, and a full-time course as your back up,
but note that you will need to do some research to find an employer willing to take you on as an apprentice
if you do not already have one.
