A minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above, (including English, maths, Physical Education and Science); or a GNVQ Intermediate / First Diploma in a related subject; or equivalent qualifications. Who The Course is for
This course is for students who want to study an academic programme to broaden their specialist focus, either to prepare for employment or to progress to a higher level course. Students on the Performance & Excellence stream will benefit from intensive training.

Course Content
On this course you will study the Edexcel National Diploma in Sport, plus Key Skills in Communication, IT and Application of Number (at the appropriate level).
The course consists of 18 units:
Body in action, Health & Safety, Training & Fitness, Exercise Health & Lifestyle, Practical Individual Sport, Sports Coaching, Sports Development.
Sports Nutrition, Instructing Physical Activity, Sports Injuries, Sports & Exercise massage, Exercise for specific groups, organising sports events, Working with children, Sport as a business, Leadership in sport, Work Experience.
There may also be an opportunity for students to undertake additional qualifications to enhance their future career and employment prospects.
All students must wear the college sports uniform, which is:
- Black/dark tracksuit bottoms (winter) and/or shorts (summer) (Purchased by student)
- College top (Purchased from the department)
- Suitable training shoes (Purchased by student)
- Students will be required to remove all visible jewellery including facial piercing joining all practical sessions (due to awarding body requirements) and have short nails.

Assessment will be by - practical assignments - written assignments - home study - assessments.
The awarding body for this course is Edexcel (formerly BTEC).

Progression Opportunities
On completion of the National Diploma, students can progress onto a relevant degree at a Higher Education institute.
If you successfully complete a level 3 course at Skelmersdale & Ormskirk College you are eligible to apply for a place on the Foundation Degree Sports Training and Rehabilitation at Skelmersdale & Ormskirk College (subject to satisfactory interview.)
Career Opportunities
Students who successfully complete the course are given support and guidance regarding potential career opportunities. These include Sports Physiotherapist, PE Teacher, Fitness Instructor or Coach and Sports Therapist.
