About this course

1. Have an understanding of the main political factions in medieval Florence (Guelfs and Ghibellins)
2. Appreciate Dante’s moral guides through the reading of extracts from the Hell, Purgatory and Paradise.
3. Give one example of how Dante used the beliefs and knowledge of his time and included it into his work.

Course programme

1. The political background and Dante’s exile as a result of his political views.
2. The importance of the guides (Virgil and Beatrice) in the Hell, Purgatory and Paradise.
3. Dante’s beliefs and knowledge.

This is a lecture and is therefore mainly tutor-led. Facts will be presented through the use of video clips, presentations, hand-outs etc. No other cost. Students will just need to bring a pen and paper.
