You will explore techniques which exploit the potential for combining coloured and patterned cloth with stitch. You will use a sketchbook to research and develop ideas. A broad theme will be set, from which you will select an area of interest to develop ideas and inform samples. A personal project will enable you to develop a more resolved textile piece or a series of experimental samples. The course can be taken on a termly basis, although new techniques are taught and developed over the whole year.VX954 explores line and image and VX958 explores surface and manipulative techniques. What students liked most about this course run in 2015/16:"Focused learning, the tutor really teaches and steers you away from anything to safe. Helps you look at your work from different angles, urges you to sketch, appraise and take time as you go, which you realise later is so valuable."

Course programme

Beginners will be introduced to the sewing machine and free-machine embroidery, working with different marks and weights of thread. You will learn basic hand embroidery stitches and techniques including working with different stitch tensions, colour mixing with stitch, patching and piecing and working with water soluble film to create cloth and lace-like structures. You will create a series of samples, inspired by the theme, exploring these techniques.

More experienced students will have the chance to build on current skills and experiment in more depth with these stitch techniques. You will explore and develop your designs in relation to the theme through your research, sampling, and evaluative sketchbook work.

All students will be introduced to a variety of relevant contemporary embroiderers and will utilise a sketchbook to
collect research, explore ideas and record discoveries. You will be invited to take part in group discussions relating
