Course programme

This workshop introduces participants to story structures that are at the core of the visual communication industries. It is a fun two-day course that includes plenty of examples from illustration, film, and other visual practices. It will provide a theoretical introduction with hands-on exercises selected on the basis of the participants’ creative practice.

Topics covered

  • The hero’s journey and the heroine’s journey as basic narrative structures.
  • Contamination and cross-pollination between the two models.
  • Structural models of storytelling applied to image making.
  • Getting an understanding of how flexible, creative and fun, story structures can be.

At the end of the weekend, participants will leave with a solid grounding of what makes a strong story and a compelling plotline — and especially how these work in visual media. They will be able to apply the knowledge that they get of the course to their own personal narrative projects and/or create a story structure to keep working on after the end of the course.
