By the end of the course, you will learn to:
have created a series of quick, playful drawings
have created some imaginary monster or animal characters
drawn or collaged a human character
made a simple illustration
sketched out a simple narrative storyboard
gained an overview of the children's publishing industry

The current children's book illustration market is highly vibrant and dynamic, and the art of visual storytelling is an ever-evolving tradition that is constantly being added to and redefined. This is the perfect course for those interested in pursuing a longer course in the subject, or those who just want to try something new. It will be a fast moving day where we'll explore creating characters in a range of materials, investigate the relationship between text and image and gain an overview of the children's publishing industry.

  • 11.00 to 11.30am: Visual Brainstorming exercise
  • 11.30 to 12.30am: Creating imaginary characters
  • 12.30 to 1.30pm: Drawing child characters in lots of different ways including looking at facial expressions
  • 2.30 to 3.30pm: Create a simple illustrated scene
  • 3.30 to 4.30pm: Sketch a simple 3 panel narrative storyboard
  • 4.30 to 5pm: Q&A about children's publishing industry
