Grounded in the latest theory, this is a practical programme that will enable you to develop advanced strategic and digital marketing skills. You will learn how to be analytical, create creative campaigns, and develop research skills that will help you assess markets in-depth. You’ll be taught by a diverse team of experts who can offer you first-hand knowledge and insight into the industry with years of commercial experience to draw from.

This course will help you expand your knowledge of the strategic and critical analytical approaches to marketing, and how digital marketing and social media is planned and executed. You’ll learn about contemporary marketing issues and social and digital media scenarios, which are embedded throughout the course.

Other key themes include insight management, innovation and entrepreneurship, customer management, campaign planning, paid, owned and earned media planning, marketing metrics, working with agencies and international marketing perspectives. Completion of the Direct and Digital Marketing module will give you significant exemptions from the Institute of Direct Marketing’s Certificate in Direct and Digital Marketing.

This is a specialist master's degree for students who already have qualifications in marketing or substantial marketing experience. If you don’t have any previous marketing qualifications or experience in the field, then our Marketing Management MSc is an ideal choice if you’d like to start a career in the industry.

Graduates from the course are now pursuing successful careers in large multinational organisations and medium-sized entrepreneurial businesses, typically in roles such as product development, brand management, digital marketing, marketing communications, market research, customer service management, e-marketing and sales.

Recent graduates from Marketing MSc programmes are now working for a variety of UK and international companies including IBM, Toyota,Candi, Schroders Investments, Saudi Industrial Development Fund and Sudan International University.

Recent agency and media appointments include WPP, DDB Hong Kong, Leo Burnett Cyprus, Razorfish, Punch Communications,Creare Design, The Station Agency and Big Communications.

Applicants will normally hold an undergraduate degree with a minimum pass of 2:2, or overseas equivalent, in marketing or in business or management with substantial marketing content.

Applicants typically require 45 credits, or equivalent, in marketing to receive an offer for this course. Applicants with no marketing experience or fewer than 45 credits should apply for our Marketing Management MSc.

We are accredited by The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) for a Dual Award. This Dual Award means that while you are studying for your qualification you also have the opportunity to work towards achieving the CIM Professional Diploma in Marketing.

In addition, if you successfully complete the elective Direct and Digital Marketing module you will benefit from significant exemptions from the Certificate in Direct and Digital Marketing awarded by the Institute of Direct Marketing (IDM). Most of our students opt to take the additional exam required and leave with this professional standard certificate alongside their marketing degree. These additional professional qualifications differentiate you from other candidates in a competitive jobs market.

Teaching and assessment

Modules include formal lectures, tutorials, workshops and interactive sessions.

Teaching contact hours

Full-time option

For the full-time option you should be prepared to devote approximately 38 hours a week to your studies. You will typically have up to 14 hours contact hours of teaching most weeks for semester 1 and 2. Teaching is through a mix of lecturers, tutorials, seminars and lab sessions and the breakdown of these activities is shown in each module description.

In addition each module provides a 2 hour surgery each week available for individual consultation with the lecturer. You may also have some scheduled meetings with your programme leader, personal tutor, and/or careers throughout the year to discuss your academic progress and personal development.

Self-directed study: In order to prepare for, and assimilate, the work in lectures and seminars you will be expected to make regular use of our on-line resources, participate in classroom discussions including on our virtual learning environment (VLE) and engage in personal study, revision and reflection for approximately 24 hours per work during semester 1 and 2.

In semester 3, you will undertake independent research for your dissertation (or In-company project), and again should typically allow around 38 hours per week for this. You will be allocated a dedicated academic supervisor to support you, who you will be able to contact on a regular basis.

Part-time option

For the part-time option you should be prepared to devote approximately 19 hours a week to your studies. You will typically have up to 7 hours contact hours of teaching most weeks. Teaching is through a mix of lecturers, tutorials, seminars and lab sessions and the breakdown of these activities is shown in each module description.

In addition each module provides a surgery hour each week available for individual consultation with the lecturer. You may also have some scheduled meetings with your programme leader, personal tutor, and/or careers throughout the year to discuss your academic progress and personal development.
