Course programme

Modules include Algebra, Calculus, Discrete Maths, Geometry and Trigonometry, Mathematical Thinking, Mechanics and Statistics.

Through this course we aim to:

· Prepare you for your PGCE programme – we’ll highlight teaching and learning issues in mathematics;

· Inspire passion for maths including all aspects of local, national and global developments within it;

· Help you understand the knowledge, concepts and skills associated with maths;

· Model imaginative and creative approaches to teaching and learning, and excellent practice in assessment;

· Prepare you to teach maths up to Key Stage 4 level. You’ll have the opportunity to reach up to A-level standard teaching knowledge.

Course assessment

There will be an assessment task for each unit of work. These will take a variety of forms depending on the unit of work. In addition you’ll be expected to sit a KS3 SAT paper; a GCSE paper and some A level papers.

You’ll be expected to achieve a sufficient or better standard in each category on each task. There will be one opportunity to re-submit any task that does not reach the required standard on first submission. You’ll be given the deadline for resubmission when the work is returned to you.

In the first week of the course we expect you to complete a self-assessment of your prior knowledge. This will be used during the first tutorial to discuss where your strengths and weaknesses lie and what you need to get from the course. It will also form the basis for on-going self-evaluation throughout the course.

You’ll be asked to repeat the same process before each tutorial and to bring an up to date self-evaluation with you to each tutorial. This linked with achievements on all assessments and is used formatively to help you set appropriate targets for improvement.
