The recommended entry requirements are a minimum of four GCSEs at grade C or above (which would ideally include Maths and English), or equivalent GNVQ/BTEC qualifications. Entry can also be gained through achieving a relevant National Certificate, this could be the level 2 Certificate, Extended Certificate or Diploma in Horse Care, however other land- based qualifications would be considered on individual merit. Mature students would be considered on previous practical experience within an equine environment. Who is the course for?

The level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Horse Management is a qualification aimed at providing individuals with a range of practical skills and knowledge aimed at preparing you for employment or progression into further training within the equine industry

Do I need any formal qualifications?

The recommended entry requirements are a minimum of four GCSEs at grade C or above (which would ideally include Maths and English), or equivalent GNVQ/BTEC qualifications. Entry can also be gained through achieving a relevant National Certificate, this could be the level 2 Certificate, Extended Certificate or Diploma in Horse Care, however other land- based qualifications would be considered on individual merit. Mature students would be considered on previous practical experience within an equine environment.

What will I study on the course?

You will need to successfully complete about 6 units depending on your selected modules. The qualification includes a large number of choices of topics which are both practical and theoretical. This qualification has no mandatory units but the 29 optional units cover areas of interest such as: - Horse Fitness - Horse Rehabilitation and Therapy - Riding Horses on the Flat and over Fences - Stud Management - Horse Handling, Backing and Training - Breed development - Equestrian Teaching There are also more general units such as: - Planning and Monitoring Feeding - Understanding Animal Health - Yard and Stable Management - Riding and Exercising Horses - Animal Biology - Anatomy and Physiology. For all modules you will study both practical and theoretical elements, learning how to do things and why you need to do and know certain things.

How is the course organised

The course runs full-time over one year. The Subsidiary Diploma is part of a larger suite of Horse Management qualifications, and is broadly equivalent to one A Levels. This qualification has been developed in conjunction with industry, and to ensure it equips the learner with the right work skills it is delivered both practically and theoretically. It includes visits to industry and education trips with employability as a strong focus.

How will my progress be assessed?

Progress is assessed by a range of methods which include practical assessments, observations, written assignments and tests. Assessment is continuous and students are continually encouraged to upgrade their skills. 1:1 progress reviews ensure that students remain motivated and continue to work to their full potential.

Can I gain any extra qualifications while on the course?

Throughout this course of study there is also the opportunity to gain other qualifications which will help you gain employment or prepare you for further training and qualifications. These opportunities include studying for BHS exams including Stages 1, 2,3, Riding and Road Safety, Preliminary Teaching Test. There is also the opportunity to take UKCC (Coaching Certificates) and complimentary qualifications such as employability, first aid and ATV test. Training for any extra qualification is provided however there may be costs attached for many additional qualifications in the form of membership fees and exam entry fees

What final qualification will I get if I am successful?

Next Steps

The Subsidiary Diploma has been developed to equip learners to go directly into employment or progress to further training. You might progress into work such as: - Riding Yard Management - Assistant Manager (competition yards) - Assistant Manager (Riding School) - Competition Groom - Equine Nutritionist - Stud Manager Progression into training could be adding a further 6 units (depending on modules) to achieve a Diploma in Horse Management Level 3 (equivalent of two A Levels), or by adding another 12 units you would achieve an Extended Diploma in Horse Management Level 3 (equivalent of three A levels). Alternatively you could progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship in Horse Care and Management which allows you to combine working in industry and attending college one day per week. The Subsidiary Diploma counts towards entry into Higher education and a range of programmes such as an Equine Studies Foundation Degree, a BSc (Hons) in Equine Studies or a BSc (Hons) in sports psychology. Can I receive any financial support whilst I am studying?

Many of our learners study for free with a "Fee Waiver" when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18. If you are not entitled to a "Fee Waiver" you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 23 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 you will be able to apply for a 24+ Loan that cover all of your course costs. Higher Education learners are entitled to apply for HE Loans that cover the cost of tuition. In addition, depending on your chosen course of study and individual circumstances, you may be entitled to a maintenance loan.

Please note, from September 2016, anyone over 19 years of age can apply for a loan to cover all course fees for qualifying courses.

All learners can also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
