Course programme
Is there a bag you love, an idea you have in mind, or a range you are planning and need help with? This course offers a one day master class in pattern-cutting, followed by two days exploring decoration and construction ideas for fashion handbags.
We will show you how to analyse different bag shapes to devise your own pattern blocks.
On day one, you will learn to:
* Translate a 2D sketch or reference into a 3D shape
* Take accurate pattern measurements
* Add reference marks, turnings and construction information
* Deal with fullness- gathers, darts and tucks
* Make patterns for linings, facings and the internal structures of a bag
Katherine will show you how to adapt your own basic block shape to make several variations of one design, by swinging seams, altering scale or adding details such as pockets, flaps and alternative closures.
Make up and decorate your bag on the following weekend workshop.
This playful and inventive weekend focuses on decorative elements for soft leather fashion accessories and other articles. Folk elements and vintage detailing are high-fashion at the moment, adding value, resonance and personality to simple garments and accessories.
Katherine Pogson shows you how to work with leather to incorporate these ideas, leading you through a series of possible approaches and drawing on her archive of historic, costume and vernacular sources for inspiration.
Working with a variety of different colours and textures of soft leather, suede and other fabrics, you will:
* Explore contemporary stitch, incorporating elements of folk embroidery - bargello, crewel work, smocking- to create your own patterns and motifs.
* Practice machine sewing techniques for leather, including appliqué, working with metallic thread, surface embroidery, and different seam constructions.
* Learn how to create 3D effects and patterns in leather, including flower corsages, punched leatherwork, studding and printing with foil.
