Course content:
A course designed to introduce beginner knitters to the range of basic techniques, along with an introduction to the fundamentals of knitwear design. Students will choose a design project to create on the course. They will learn key knitting techniques, along with the skills to work independently and creatively.
At the end of the course you will be able to:
Identify different yarn types and appropriate needle sizes.
Cast on, cast off, increase and decrease stitches.
Be able to knit basic plain, purl and ribbing stitches.
Develop a range of at least 5 different speciality stitches, including cabling.
Understand the building blocks of design to create your own chosen project during the course. These projects will be a fixed range of a choice of 5 different projects- jacket, jumper, vest, bag or cushion.
Be able to sew up knitting using 2 basic techniques.
Use these design building block skills to independently design and execute simple projects.
Consolidate any current skills you have, develop design skills, as well as receive assistance in developing new techniques.
Be able to read and use commercial patterns.
Course Structure:
The basic building blocks will be outlined with photographic evidence/ video evidence/ direct demonstration/ groupwork/ direct, personal assistance, and student practice.
Students will learn the building blocks of design through observation, personal practice and experimentation.
Students will learn to follow through a pattern design process through following the choice of 1 of 5 design projects to make on the course.
Reference is made to technical knitting terms, abbreviations and the use of commercial patterns.
Students use the course time to forum any longstanding knitting technique queries.
Course resources:
Smartboard - including video function. Noticeboards. Sample completed projects (tutor's own). Internet access.
Assessment:
Tutor and self-assessment. ILPs measuring outcomes.

When information is available you will notice 2 different fees stated for this course. The fee you pay is dependent on your status:
Fee 1: Standard fee;
Fee 2: Aged 60+ years fee
Students in receipt of an income-based benefit pay £20 per course per term.
You will need to bring proof of age and any benefits when you enrol.
You DO NOT have to pay a college registration fee for these courses, but you may have to pay for additional course materials.Materials costs:
None. Students need to bring a notebook and A4 folder, basic sewing kit and oddments of DK yarn and a pair of 4.00 mm knitting needles
