Course programme

The programme requires the completion of seven units to gain the full award. This is comprised of five mandatory units and two optional units.

The mandatory units are made up of the following:-

  • STL1 Provide support for learning activities
  • STL2 Support children’s development
  • STL3 Help to keep children safe
  • STL4 Contribute to positive
  • STL5 Provide effective support for your colleagues

The optional units, of which candidates must choose two, are made up of the following:-

  • STL6 Support literacy and innumeracy activities
  • STL7 Support the use of information and communication technology for teaching and learning
  • STL8 Use information and communication technology to support pupils learning
  • STL9 Observe and report on pupil performance
  • STL10 Support children’s play and learning
  • STL11 Contribute to supporting bilingual/multilingual pupils
  • STL12 Support a child with disabilities or special educational needs
  • STL13 Contribute to moving and handling individuals
  • STL14 Support individuals during therapy sessions
  • STL15 Support children and young people’s play
  • STL16 Provide displays
  • STL17 Invigilate tests

Each unit requires candidates to demonstrate competency in a range of Performance Criteria ("What they must do"), and satisfy the assessor that they have a range of knowledge ("What they must know") related to the units.
