2. Course description Designed to help learners build the knowledge and skills needed to support teaching and learning in schools. The units taught cover children and young people's development, the requirements of safeguarding and the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion. You must achieve 9 mandatory units and 2 optional units leading to a total of 30 credits. You will build a portfolio of evidence that supports the assessment criteria of the course. You will also be assessed in the workplace by an assessor who will judge their competency over several units within the school environment. Assessors will provide feedback to learners on their practice and will also set homework tasks to complete. College-based sessions will be for 15 weeks and will run alongside the work placement. Please note that workplace assessments continue after the college based sessions have been completed.

3. Entry requirements You will be expected to sit an English and Maths initial assessment prior to being accepted onto the course. This will be a computer based test to ensure that you will be able to cope with the demands of the course and have a good level of maths and English to support children as they learn in school. Please see brochure for Initial Assessment dates. There is also a writing task to complete to assess your suitability for the course. You must be Level 2 or working towards Level 2 in your Initial Assessment to enrol on the course. Initial Assessment is conducted to ensure that this is the right course for you and where required additional support can be put in place to help you succeed. If you are unsuccessful in your Initial Assessment, guidance will be given to you regarding a more suitable course. A) Guidance needed: Learners must have carried out an initial assessment and have tutor approval to enrol on this programme. Please call 020 3045 5176 to arrange an initial assessment. B) Entry requirements: Successful completion of the initial assessment. C) A work placement of a minimum of 6 hours per week for a period of up to a year in Year 1 or above. This must be commenced before the start of the course and learners should hold a current DBS certificate (this can be arranged through the college). Written confirmation from the school placement regarding the number of hours and year group you will be supporting is required on enrolment. * Initial Assessments * Before enrolling you are required to complete an assessment in Maths and English at the college. This will help us ensure that the course is suitable for you and that you have the right English and Maths skills to enjoy the course and succeed. Assessment method A variety of teaching strategies will be used, e.g. class discussion, tutor-led sessions, research projects, paired work and group work. You will need to complete a portfolio of evidence and be assessed in the workplace.
