This module is for anyone currently working within the perioperative environment, in the scrub role and plans to undertake the role of the surgical first assistant.

Due to the extended nature of this role, there are some additional requirements that need to be met by the employer/employee:

Potential students must currently be employed within the theatre environment, with a minimum of 12 months experience.
Completion of Theatre manager approval form, which highlights that the hospital/trust accepts vicarious liability for the student.
The allocation/agreement of appropriate mentors: Consultant surgeons in two speciality areas, one of which must cover laparoscopic surgery. Senior practitioner (registered nurse/ODP), who also has a mentorship award and are currently in/familiar with advanced roles (Surgical first assistant or higher) to oversee the whole of the student Surgical First Assistant’s training.
It is also advisable to have completed or have arranged an in-house catheterisation course prior to starting the module, in order to meet local policy requirements.
During the duration of this module, students will need to undertake 100 hours performing the role of the surgical first assistant.
