To enable students to explore and develop understanding of the need for sustainable development and to place this in an industrial context. To deliver and support the acquisition of up to date knowledge on environmental legislation and environmental management systems. To enable students to develop an understanding of several key issues and practical techniques including environmental monitoring and measurement, environmental audit and waste management. Suitable for: Graduates in science, engineering or technology who are working in the metals manufacturing sector and wish to expand their theoretical and practical knowledge of the issues involved in sustainable manufacturing. Entrants who do not have a first degree, but can demonstrate that they have the equivalent academic, professional and personal capabilities can be interviewed to assess their suitability for the course.

Peter Hodgson
Module Leader
Dr Peter Hodgson, BSc Physics and Applied Physics, MSc Optoelectronic & Laser Devices, PhD Physics, PgC Environmental Life Cycle Management, CPhys and MPhys. Peter has worked in a Research and Development environment for circa 20 years combining public sector work with a range of private sector companies working in investigatory and project management roles. Peter is currently employed by Corus RD&T as a Researcher in the Sustainability Knowledge Group of the Environment Department.
Course programme
INDICATIVE MODULE CONTENTS
1) Environmental Science (including impacts on health and eco systems)
2) Energy (efficiency, auditing, thermal modelling)
3) Sustainability (3 elements of, context, industry perspectives)
4) Legislation (UK and European)
5) Environmental management systems and auditing.
6) Waste and Resource Efficiency (including the regulators perspective)
7) Assessment Tools (Life Cycle Assessment, footprinting)
8) Environmental monitoring and measurement.
THE AIMS OF THE MODULE ARE
- To enable students to explore and develop understanding of the need for sustainable development and to place this in an industrial context.
- To deliver and support the acquisition of up to date knowledge on environmental legislation and environmental management systems.
- To enable students to develop an understanding of several key issues and practical techniques including environmental monitoring and measurement, environmental audit and waste management.
- To develop independent thinking and modes of self learning in respect of sustainable development and to consider a number of perspectives.
Start Time: 8.30am each day.
Finish: 5.30pm each day.
Additional information
Comments: This module can be studied as part of the MSc Manufacturing, Materials and Management Programme or as an individual module for people needing this specific technical knowledge. The course is run in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University.
Credits/Points: 15 credits towards a Post Graduate qualification from the Materials Manufacturing and Management Programme.
