You will consolidate your learning, drawing on previous knowledge and skills, to develop confidence and competence within the holistic symptom management of a patient with palliative/end of life care needs. The multi-professional focus will be centred on the individual patient’s needs and symptom management to enhance their quality of life.
About this course
Critically evaluate the complexities of individualised symptom management within supportive, palliative and/or end of life care, incorporating evidence-based practice and critical discussion of the ethical considerations involved.
Critically analyse the practical and professional issues relating to the multi-professional/integrated approach to holistic symptom management within palliative/end of life care, and evaluate the potential for practice development in your clinical area.
All health, social, allied health, pastoral and supportive staff, working within palliative care, or professional development toward a palliative care context. The module is aimed at providing inter-professional learning within the specialist area of palliative and end of life care, focusing on quality of life.
2:1 first degree or above, or equivalent providing the student with the academic and/or clinical competencies to work at the appropriate academic level
Evidence of support from employer
A background of working within palliative care or of aiming to be moving within/ developing palliative care in the workplace setting is required
Students must have a minimum overall International English Language Testing score (IELTS) of 7 or above.

This is an optional module working towards PG Certificate Palliative Care, it also can be taken as a stand-alone CPD module, or as part of the wider MSc Advanced Practice or MSc Health & Social Care, depending upon academic counselling

About this module
Managing symptoms within palliative and end of life care, incorporating the presentation and epidemiology, disease trajectory, underpinned by best practice within symptom assessment and management, will aim to ensure a coordinated individual treatment plan, promoting comfort and delivered with compassion. Holistic, person-centred symptom control must include and address any preferred preferences and wishes of patients. Particular attention to nutrition and hydration and the patient’s comfort and dignity are prioritised.
