Aspiring towards a career teaching in primary education? Want to earn while you learn? Our Teacher Apprenticeship is a government-funded route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and enables you to gain a Level 6 postgraduate qualification while undertaking paid training in a school.

As a teacher apprentice, you will be responsible for your own class of children, spending four days each week in school and one day at University College Birmingham. This route is particularly well-suited to teaching assistants (including higher level), current unqualified teachers and capable graduates.

As part of your studies at university, you will learn about how and why particular subjects are taught in different ways – the study of pedagogy – as well as gaining skills and knowledge related to curriculum content, structure and progression. You will also engage with the wider professional responsibilities of becoming a teacher.

Note: This qualification entitles you to teach in schools in England only. You must demonstrate that you are able to achieve QTS by the end of your training programme.

Teaching

In light of COVID-19, we have made some changes to the way we deliver our teaching. We are continually following the guidelines and measures put in place by the UK Government to ensure our students and staff are safe on campus, whilst remaining committed to providing high-quality education. The information below explains how teaching will take place in semester 2 (or semester 1 for those joining us in January) for each level/year of this course.

The Teachers’ Standards provide the framework for assessment for the Teacher Apprenticeship. These professional standards set out eight key areas in teaching, and three further areas with regard to your personal and professional conduct that you must demonstrate competency in to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Assessment activities include gathering a portfolio of evidence for the Teachers’ Standards and lesson observations.
