Reviews
Course programme
The programme offers participants the opportunity to explore in-depth aspects of English, English language pedagogy, course and curriculum design, materials design and evaluation, including digital media, and the management of teacher education and development. Participants are also equipped with high-level analytical and investigative skills.
Course structure
Students do preparatory reading for weekly seminars, which offer opportunities for discussion. They may also be asked to present their ideas formally to fellow students. In addition, students are expected to work independently, reading around their subject, identifying relevant areas for further enquiry, and undertaking a small-scale research study. Students are offered support through individual tutorials and the university's online virtual learning environment studentcentral.
Areas of study
An introductory module investigates current issues in second language pedagogy. Two modules examine various aspects of applied linguistics including the analysis of oral communication and second-language acquisition. A further module examines and evaluates language teaching materials and curricula in relation to specific contexts. Students choose two further option modules and also attend a series of workshops, seminars and presentations, delivered across the academic year, preparing them for work on their 15,000 word dissertation.
Career and progression opportunities
Graduates typically have gone on to work as course directors, as well as in ELT management, publishing and teacher education and research.
Mode of Attendance: Part-time: up to 6 years
