Structure & Content

Technological Education is an exciting and diverse area of the curriculum. Centred around creative technological processes and based on a ‘learning by doing’ philosophy, it encompasses subjects such as:

  • Craft and Design
  • Product Design
  • Graphic Communication
  • Technological Studies
  • Practical Craft Skills

Year 3 and 4 Courses

All courses in Year 3 are compulsory. In the first half of Year 4, students may choose one of 3 courses, allowing them to specialise in either mechanics and materials, programmable control or design.

Year 3

Engineering (75 credits at SCQF level 8)

  • Materials and Structures, 15 credits
  • Electronics and Programmable Systems, 15 credits
  • Engineering Mathematics 3, 15 credits
  • Electrical and Mechanical Systems, 15 credits
  • Engineering Design and Practice 2, 15 credits

Education (45 credits at SCQF level 9)

  • Teaching Tech Education in Secondary Schools A, 20 credits
  • Learning and Teaching in Secondary Schools A, 20 credits
  • School Experience 1A, 5 credits

Year 4

Engineering (45 credits at SCQF level 9)

  • Engineering Design, 15 credits
  • Control Systems B, 15 credits
  • Mechanics and Materials, 15 credits
  • or Programming and Microcontrollers B, 15 credits
  • or Design for BSc Technology with Education, 15 credits

Education (15 credits at SCQF level 9 and 60 credits at level 10)

  • Teaching Tech Education in Secondary Schools B, 10 credits
  • Learning and Teaching in Secondary Schools B, 10 credits
