Minimum requirements

High 2:1

(67%)



Undergraduate degree with high 2:1 honours (i.e. overall average of at least 67% across all years of study) in history, international relations, political science, economics or other appropriate subject. Candidates who do not achieve a 2:1 but have relevant professional or voluntary experience will also be considered. Mature candidates will be considered favourably.

In order to meet the academic entry requirements for this programme you should have a minimum high 2:1 undergraduate degree with a final mark of at least 67% or above in the UK marking scheme. If you are still studying you should be achieving an average of at least 67% or above in the UK marking scheme.

Application procedure

Applications must be made online using King’s online application portal apply.kcl.ac.uk and a non-refundable application fee of £60 applies.

All applications are assessed by a committee of academic tutors. This process takes on average eight weeks.

Course programme

Course detail Description

The complex nature of terrorism and counter terrorism demands a multi-dimensional and multi-disciplinary analysis. Our course provides an overview of the related theories and paradigms and will prepare you to undertake further research or to enter careers that require an understanding of these issues.

We will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of one of the most contested concepts in contemporary discourse – terrorism – and its relationship with relevant and related issues in the field of security studies.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

For lectures, seminars and feedback, you will typically have two hours per week over two 10-week terms per 40-credit module. This can be split into one lecture + one seminar or other combinations thereof. You will also have 360 hours of self-study. Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.

For the dissertation module, you will have 12 hours of training workshops and supervision to complement the 588 hours of self-study.

Assessment

  • Most modules will be assessed through a combination of essays, presentation, oral vivas and/or exams.
  • The dissertation module assessment will be based on a 100% dissertation assignment (up to 15,000 words).

Year 1

Courses are divided into modules, and students on this course take modules totalling 180 credits.

Required Modules You are required to take the following modules:
  • Terrorism & Counter Terrorism (40 credits)
  • Dissertation (60 credits)
Optional Modules

In addition, you are required to take 80 credits from a wide range of optional modules that may typically include:

  • Armchair Intelligence – Open Sources & Online Investigation (20 credits)
  • Chemical, Biological, Radiological & Nuclear (CBRN) Terrorism (40 credits)
  • Home Grown Radicalisation & Counter-Radicalisation in Western Europe & North America (40 credits)
  • Responding to Terrorism (20 credits)
  • The War on Terror: Anglo-American Foreign & Security Policy since 9/11 (20 credits)
  • Securing the States: Intelligence & Security in the United States (20 credits)
  • Or any of the other 50 options offered by the Department of War Studies

If you are studying part-time, in your first year you will take 40 credits of required taught modules and 40 credits of optional modules. In your second year you will take your dissertation (60 credits) and a further 40 credits of optional modules.
