The A/S level consists of 2 units of work. About this course
People who either have an interest in this area of art and design or who wish to pursue it as a career. Students should have a grade C or above in Art and Design or Textiles GCSE and the college requirements for A level students. Previous experience in portfolio form will be considered from more mature students.

What are the main features of this course?
The A/S level consists of 2 units of work. Students will be introduced to a wide variety of textile media and techniques, including dying, painting and printing of fabric patterns, surface decoration and embroidery. Fashion design and garment making will also be studied. Drawing skills for textile and fashion design will be developed using various media.
Students will be expected to produce a folio of work for each unit, which consists of practical work and relevant research on historical and contemporary textiles or fashion. The use of sketchbooks is also important and students will be encouraged to use these for preparatory work, research and homework.
For students who wish to go on to complete the A level in the second year, a further 2 units are studied, in which there is opportunity to develop individual interests and build upon knowledge and skills gained in the A/S course.

How is the course assessed?
The course is modular, with 2 units examined in the first year and 2 in the second year. Coursework is an integral part of the final assessment. Controlled tests, set by the examination board are worth 50% each.

Where can I go next?
The course provides a wide range of studies in portfolio form for entry onto Foundation Studies in Art and Design or degree level. This subject can be combined with the other AS and A levels in the department, or combined with other disciplines to provide qualifications for entry into university.
