This course aims to inspire creativity for textiles and surface pattern with playful drawing exploration through collage. Collage is a technique with so many creative styles and variations. You will be shown simple ways to create your own papers to use within your collage as well as exploring and incorporating collected materials. You will also investigate techniques to compose collage such as cutting, ripping and layering.

Beginners
- Understand the basic techniques of composing a collage and how to create layout ideas.
- Explore simple effective ways to create your own papers to use within collage.
- Understand creative ways to develop simple collages that could be used in developing ideas for your own textile and surface pattern application.
- Gain confidence through the opportunity to build a small body of personal work of new creative ideas, techniques and processes
- Initiate possibilities to build upon within your sketchbooks for further textile and surface pattern application.

More advanced
- Develop your creative experimentation.

- Basic materials are included.
- You may wish to bring a further selection of drawing media that you like to work with..
- You may wish to bring a selection of papers/card which you would like to experiment with. Consideration of colour, texture and pattern would give you great variety. For example: old magazines and books which you don’t mind cutting up, shopping/junk mail catalogues, plain, patterned and textured papers, corrugated card/brown boxes, tissue paper, baking parchment, brown packing paper, cellophane ll also need to bring a selection of 4-6 images which you find inspiring...

This is a creative course with the emphasis on hands on application. There will be teaching materials such as basic information sheets provided to you as well as examples of the techniques and processes that you will be exploring. There will be discussion, support and feedback throughout the course.

Course programme

You will develop a body experimental work through investigating some of the various ideas and techniques that can be used in paper collage to create your own works. Discovering ways of working with paper to create texture, colour and surface pattern. You will then explore further ways of finding endless colour and design inspiration through the use of your own photos or found images. You will have the opportunity to discuss creative ways of how to develop your paper collage designs for use in any textile medium.

Additional information

City Lit offers a variety of textile related courses such as screen printing, transfer printing, heat setting techniques, Photoshop, manipulated textiles and hand stitch techniques to name a few. You could use your collage design inspiration, from the body of work created on this course, and develop it further into numerous textile works.
