Textiles BTEC Award Level 3

About the course:
This course will cover a wide variety of techniques in textiles, primarily in feltmaking and creative machine embroidery. Learners will choose a creative pathway in either Embroidered Textiles or Feltmaking and work towards developing a portfolio of design ideas, samples and finished items. During the course learners will research other artists, designers and crafts people and build a research file which will inform the practical work.

Course Content:
This Edexcel Level 3 BTEC Award in Textiles comprises of two units:

· Art and Design Specialist Contextual Investigation - This unit requires learners to investigate contemporary and historical practice in art, craft and design relevant to their specialist pathway. Learners will gain an insight into different artists' ideas and approaches and develop an understanding of the context in which the artist, craftsperson or designer worked or is working. Learners' choice of subject matter will cover a breadth of historical and contemporary movements, artists and designers. The research undertaken will inform and develop the learners' practical work.

· Embroidered Textiles - This unit explores the potential of stitch in its broadest sense, from machine to hand embroidery processes. Learners are encouraged to challenge, manipulate and explore surface qualities and to utilise yarns and threads to produce a personal collection of samples, which can be interpreted for use within fashion, interior or fine art scenarios. Learners will work to specific briefs, which will give them the opportunity to investigate the scope and creative potential of the unit.

· Feltmaking and Felting - In this unit, learners are encouraged to develop the basic skills of feltmaking and felting by investigating a wide range of materials and processes to produce original and innovative experimental samples and realised outcomes. Learners will work to specific briefs which give them the opportunity to investigate their creative potential and limitations.

Learning Style:
Classes take place in an open plan art studio and involve a range of activities including group and individual work.

Equipment Requirements:
Learners are encouraged to bring their own art / sewing kit which should include Scissors, Craft Knife, Sewing Needles, Pins, Assorted Threads, Sewing Machine Needles, Towels for felting, Protective Gloves, Face Mask for dyes, A3 paper, Masking tape, pencils and glue. Learners will also need an A3 pocket display folder, an A4 folder for handouts and a sketchbook.

Assessment:
This program is assessed through coursework submission of all units required. This will require written work and research to be undertaken, but the course is substantially practical based work.

Progression:
Local job opportunities can be taken on successful completion of this course. This can involve local retail, and entry level employment in the textile industry. Learners may want to progress to the BTEC certificate in Textiles.

Additional Information:
Attendance is required for each class for continuity and to enable work to be fully completed. You may wish to do additional work to develop your ideas or work beyond the taught lessons. The contextual investigation unit will require some written work although no formal written assignments will be set.
