It is predominately practice based and will help you to construct your own approach to making and performing live theatre.
WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?
Our theatre course offers you a focused learning journey that is clearly linked to the demands of the current performing arts industry.
The course is predominantly practice based, with workshops and classes from our staff, all of who are nationally and internationally renowned theatre practitioners. You will be introduced to the latest international research findings in the performing arts, allowing you to use this knowledge to improve and enhance your performance and performance making.
If you choose this course you will benefit from:
- visiting professional artists, which in the past have included Sonia Ritter of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), Terry O’Connor from Forced Entertainment, James Yarker from Stan’s Café and Nick Walker from Talking Birds, as well as artists from Kiln Theatre and Frantic Assembly;
- the possibility to develop a career with an existing company, or to start your own. Graduates have also pursued careers in teaching, community arts or arts administration;
- experienced teaching staff who bring their professional or research expertise into their teaching;
- an opportunity to perform as part of the Coventry Mystery Plays;
- strong links to national and regional theatre companies, including The Belgrade Theatre, Theatre Absolute, Spike Theatre, Midlands Arts Centre, Trestle Theatre Company, Warwick Arts Centre, and Kiln Theatre. Our students have also recently performed at the RSC.
Professional Theatre Skills: voice, movement and methods of actor training, including improvisation, acrobatics, equilibristic and acro-balance, mime, games, mask work and puppetry.
Performance Strand: you will explore the devising process and the mixture and balance of roles needed to create performance. This is considered practically and theoretically, relating performance practice to its global, historical and cultural context.
Theatre Histories: you will learn skills in historical/ critical analysis and cultural awareness; focusing on the history and development of theatre from Ancient Greece to the present day.
In addition, you will look at theatre practices from across the globe and examine how elements of theatre from other cultures can relate to aspects of Western performance.
Your course will be based on practical classes and workshops with associated lectures and seminars. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.
