Structure
Year 1: You will be introduced to costume construction skills of sewing, pattern drafting, corsetry, dyeing and printing. You will begin to apply those skills on practical costume making projects sometimes independently and also in the context of realised productions. In addition, you will study the historical and social context of the evolution of costume in Western Europe through independent research supported by a 15 week series of lectures. Alongside your studio practice you will also undertake a Contextual Studies programme coordinated across the School of Theatre.
Year 2: Projects will increase in complexity as you progress, with further introductions into more specialised techniques such as dance costumes, beading and theatre tailoring. Realised costumes made during the year will be shown to a public audience in a costume parade. The Contextual Studies programme continues preparing you for your dissertation. You will take an elective unit, selected from a broad range of options to enhance yourcore subject of study.
Year 3: The third year is concentrated on the individual development of your creative practice and technical achievement through projects, one of which will be a self-directed piece of work allowing for a diversity of approaches to Costume Interpretation. All Costume Interpretation tutors are specialists in their field and their expert teaching encourages a high level of student achievement. The final year of your Contextual Studies programme will culminate in your dissertation.
